This unique painting by Joan Mitchell illustrates the strong influence her time in Mexico had on her painting style. In a 1986 Smithsonian Institute interview, Joan Mitchell talks about spending the summers of 1945 and 1946 in Guanajuato, Mexico. It was during this time in Guanajuato that Joan Mitchell met and was influenced by Mexican muralists Jose Clemente Orozco and David Alfero Siqueiros. Our research finds very few examples showing so clearly how much her painting style was influenced by this time in Mexico.
